Since some time, you have been struggling to make it to the gym? Good news, there are simple and effective ways to get moving. Here are 3 foolproof techniques to get yourself back into motion, even when your couch seems much more appealing.
Tip number 1: start with something achievable
According to Guillaume Feillu, a sports coach, it is important to start with a small movement, a little something – and not a mountain of exercises – to avoid getting discouraged.
“It’s a bit like when you try to eat better: you can’t change everything at once, it’s too overwhelming. So maybe start with the basics: a short walk, ten minutes of abs, take the stairs, try a fitness class…”, he advises. Because “a little bit is always better than nothing,” he reminds.
The idea is to develop your own motivation (and curiosity!), by trying a enjoyable movement, without being pushed by others. “If your wife or your general practitioner tells you to exercise ‘for your health’… it will never work!”, emphasizes Guillaume Feillu.
On the contrary, starting to perceive the benefits of a short gym session or a daily walk can be motivating. Because confidence breeds confidence.
Tip number 2: set yourself a goal
Then, once these beginnings have started, and the pleasure associated with this thought (re)discovered, “gradually add more challenging things… and set yourself a goal. Because it is difficult to move forward without a destination, like when you go on a trip without knowing where you are going,” reminds the sports coach.
Ultimately, whatever the goal (being comfortable in your body, gaining muscle mass at 70… or simply not losing it), the important thing here is to have a clear and mapped out path.
“Because without a structured program, discipline does not exist. Without discipline, you will not get results. And without those results, an idea settles in: coming or not coming to the gym will not change anything,” points out the specialist.
Tip number 3: surround yourself with motivated people
(Surrounding yourself well) is essential to last in the long run.
“You can have the best goal and the best intention in the world; without anyone by your side to support your journey, it may become complicated,” admits Guillaume Feillu.
Friends or family: it is up to you to choose the perfect ally to accompany you on this sports adventure.
And if you are already signed up for the gym – but never actually go – it may be interesting to ask yourself the right questions.
“Was the desire to exercise really present? Or was it a social effect, a trend? What did you like or dislike about this gym? What were you looking for without finding it?” emphasizes the coach. Because, it is important to remember: the gym is not suitable for everyone… and fortunately, there are many other ways to take care of yourself (outdoors, at home…).
“Then, if the click still doesn’t happen, in that case, seeking help from a coach can help, especially to help you design a real program,” the expert suggests. Finally, measuring your body fat and muscle mass (especially in the gym) can help you become aware of your overall fitness.
