Spring sunlight, strong and cool wind, and a large crowd were the conditions under which the game between Rugby Club Bretenoux Biars Vayrac and Montréjeau Gourdan-Polignan Sports Union took place.
For the first time in its history, RCBBV had the advantage of playing at home for this Round of 16 match, after 4 failed attempts away in previous seasons. While the game may not be memorable, the victory will go down in the club’s history.
At the beginning of the match, the Hauts-Garonnais team dominated the Lot region and after a penalty that hit the bar, they scored following an offside (4th minute).
But the “White and Blues” soon took the lead by converting a penalty for a high tackle (19th minute). RCBBV, who had a strong presence in lineouts, executed a perfect move and J. Fenoll scored a brilliant try in front of the posts (27th minute). On the restart, a red card against USMGP occurred, possibly the turning point of the match (29th minute).
This led to a surge in motivation for the visitors, with the game becoming more balanced, but Montréjeau took the lead with 3 penalties, putting them ahead by the 55th minute (10-12).
RCBBV quickly equalized with another penalty for a high tackle (57th minute). Shortly after, H. Farina seized the opportunity with an outstanding try (69th minute). USMGP reduced the gap with a try following more penalties and errors in defense. With 2 penalties against 1 in the final minutes, the home team secured the win.
Reaction from Pierre Etienne Bouysset (RCBBV coach): “We started the match well, with speed and attacking play, choosing to play against the wind and relying on our defense. While we weren’t rewarded initially, with a disallowed try, if we capitalize on our chances, we can seal the game before halftime. We didn’t let up, even though we felt we were penalized more than them. The video analysis will reveal the truth. Regardless of the score, we are satisfied, and the journey continues.”
