Marianne: What was the last book that shook you?
Melvil Poupaud: The Long Life (Gallimard, 2026) by Valentin Retz released last January. It is a complex novel about time travel and eternity. The author is a friend, very knowledgeable in theology and demonology. The book depicts a biologist, a prophet, and a writer all questioning eternal life: is it possible not to die? With Valentin Retz, we regularly participate in retreats, “adoration nights” at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Montmartre, in Paris. Even though I was already a believer before, I was baptized in 2022. Father Alex, who is also a magician and illusionist, took care of it. He received the Molière 2019 for the “best visual creation” for a play by Sébastien Azzopardi, “Chapter XIII.”
