PSG’s Missed Opportunities in the Transfer Market
Since Qatar’s arrival, PSG has been known to recruit top players. A few years ago, the club had targeted an African champion who was one of the best in his position. The deal did not go through, but the player confirmed that he was approached by the French champions.
Last summer, PSG decided to strengthen their central defense. To prepare for the post-Marquinhos era, the Parisian club chose Illia Zabarnyi, who arrived from Bournemouth for 63 million pounds. So far, the transfer of the Ukrainian international has been a failure, as he has struggled to make an impact in Paris and has shown inconsistency in some matches.
PSG Nearly Signed an African Champion
Before Illia Zabarnyi’s arrival, PSG was looking to sign another top defender. The Parisian club had negotiations with Kalidou Koulibaly when he was still at Napoli. The African champion, who won the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, revealed PSG’s interest during an interview with Canal Football Club.

Koulibaly Opted for Chelsea
In 2022, after eight seasons at Napoli, Kalidou Koulibaly was transferred to Chelsea, not PSG. The central defender spent only one season in England and has been playing for Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia since 2023. At 34, the Senegalese international seems to have moved on from Europe and is unlikely to join PSG.
