We, citizens, express our indignation and anger at the recent broadcast of a video by Studio Brussel, showing the destruction of statues of Jesus and the Virgin Mary in a “rage room”. In this video, the perpetrators don’t just destroy these objects: they openly mock the Christian religion, sending a shocking and deeply disrespectful message.
These acts are not isolated incidents. They are part of a worrying trend: the trivialization of destruction or mockery towards Christianity, and more broadly towards religious symbols, which is occurring more and more often, not only in Belgium but in many countries. This trivialization creates a climate where contempt for religious beliefs is normalized, particularly when there is a double standard: these same behaviors would not be acceptable towards other religions.
We ask the authorities and parties concerned:
- An official apology from the authors and Studio Brussel for the distribution of this disrespectful content
- To react publicly to condemn these acts and recall respect for all religions, including Christianity.
- To apply clear and systematic sanctions against the perpetrators of damage targeting places, objects or representations linked to the Christian religion
- Of raise awareness among the public and the media about respect for beliefs and religious beliefs, in order to prevent this type of behavior in the future.
- To examine and apply appropriate legal or educational measuresso that acts of mockery or incitement to religious contempt do not recur.
- To promote equal treatment between all religionsso that each belief can be respected without distinction.
Respect for religious beliefs is a fundamental pillar of our democratic society and of living together. It is unacceptable that acts of destruction and mockery are publicly broadcast and trivialized, sending a negative message to young people and society. We call for collective awareness and concrete actions to protect Christianity and guarantee equal treatment for all religions, in Belgium and beyond.
Sign this petition to show that respect for religious beliefs matters and that such acts cannot go unanswered.
