Camila Morrone in ‘A Very Bad Feeling’

Set design, white dress, guests, rings, vows, and anxieties. Lots of anxieties. On Thursday, March 26, Netflix released ‘A Very Bad Feeling.’ This horror series centered around marriage is produced by the Duffer brothers, known for ‘Stranger Things.’ While the star power might attract viewers, does it manage to captivate them? Opinions vary.

Take a young bride with a traumatic past, and a wealthy, kind-hearted groom. Place them in a creepy luxury chalet filled with stuffed animals. Add a totally neurotic in-law family, and you have the ingredients of the new Netflix series. Camila Morrone and Adam DiMarco star in this psychological (but not only) thriller set in a snowy and eerie atmosphere.

Due to time constraints, we haven’t seen the entire first season yet, consisting of eight episodes. Therefore, we’re unable to provide a comprehensive and honest review. However, our initial reaction can be described as quite mixed. We were visually mesmerized by the direction, the icy landscapes, and the numerous eerie elements, like those stuffed hunting dogs no one should make eye contact with. We were also terrified by the well-executed jump scares, to the point of lowering the volume or looking away to spare our nerves.

A Masterful Horror Series

What everyone agrees on is the show’s horror potential. With flashbacks and flash-forwards of blood trails, horrific family stories about a woodsman wandering in the forest, and ghostly figures haunting the corridors of the dark mansion with insufficient lighting, it’s definitely unsettling.

‘The Guardian’ describes the series as “so infernal it will keep you from sleeping,” while ‘Indiewire’ praises the direction, stating it will delight horror and gore fans. ‘Screen Rant’ is full of praise, calling it a “thrilling and terrifying series that will leave all viewers shaken.”

Camila Morrone’s impeccable performance, along with other actors like Adam DiMarco, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Gus Birney, has also been applauded. However, opinions differ on the pacing of the series written by Haley Z. Boston.

Scattered Puzzle

Some critics, like ‘Time’, feel that the series takes too long to truly kick off. They mention the struggle to resist speeding up the playback to finally understand what’s happening. They joke about the need to wait halfway through the series to begin grasping what they’re watching. ‘Variety’ shares a similar view, stating that horror, especially this specific storyline, might not lend itself well to the format of a chopped-up TV series.

For ‘Screen Rant’, however, this disjointed and slow-paced narrative is a way to “keep the viewer on edge because they never know who to believe or trust.” ‘Indiewire’ also praised how “each episode that brings the couple closer to the altar is filled with chilling twists and intelligent existential reflections.”

Some preferred the initial dark, misty, and eerie episodes, where you question, “What on earth is happening?” Others enjoyed the later episodes in which Rachel and the viewer start piecing together the puzzle. Some critics loved it, while others hated it. Ultimately, you’ll have to form your own opinion – just not while eating, and definitely with the lights on.
