A Major Invention
It must be said that it has something to impress. In fact, for a little history, polar material was patented in 1979 by the company Malden Mills (now Polartec LLC). The innovation had such an impact that Time Magazine classified Polar Fleece (which means fleece) among the 100 major inventions of the 20th century.
Will slim jeans make a big comeback in 2026? Anyway. An alternative to wool sweaters or as a mid-season jacket, fleece or sherpa keeps you warm by insulating and offers unparalleled softness. It is also relatively inexpensive and easy to care for. A quick spin in the washing machine at 30 degrees and you’re good to go. However, be careful not to wash it too much because each run through the machine releases microplastics into the water.
It is also a material that quickly wicks away moisture and does not absorb water, unlike wool. However, it is not waterproof. Its only drawback is that its synthetic fibers make it easily flammable. Fleece jackets are made of woven polyester from recycled PET bottles. It is then washed so that it shrinks and clusters on one side, giving it that very characteristic “sheep wool” appearance.
How to Wear It?
Fleece jackets and sweaters come in multiple colors and styles. Short jackets with zippers like a vest or pullover abound alongside longer versions used as coats. From the most classic, off-white, beige, brown, through to brighter colors and prints, there’s no shortage. Whatever you choose, sherpa does not deny its origins, especially in the short version. But you can break this sporty side by pairing a fleece jacket in shades of red with gray felt trousers, for example.
Aren’t ill-fitting clothes make you sick? We have seen these soft materials worn on loose and comfortable clothing a lot. That said, not everyone can dare to wear the oversized fleece combo, black leggings, and fur-lined Uggs. Instead, you can opt for a fleece worn over straight jeans or a sleeveless printed version over a white blouse with booties. It can also be worn with sneakers for a distinctly streetwear look.
As for prices, they vary widely, like any garment, but you can get one from a sportswear store without breaking the bank.
