Pathé Films, co-producer ofAllyshared a first image of Bong Joon-ho’s future animated feature film, showing the eponymous main character. The genesis of the film dates back to 2019, when the conception of Parasitewhich earned the South Korean director a Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
In the meantime, he realized Mickey 17a science fiction film based on the novel Mickey7 d’Edward Ashton (trad. Benoît Domis, Bragelonne).
Ally, a small sea creature both curious and endearing, lives in the unexplored depths of the South Pacific. She dreams of one day seeing the sun and becoming the star of an animal documentary. But when a mysterious plane crashes into the ocean, his peaceful world is suddenly threatened. Accompanied by loyal and colorful, although unlikely, companions, Ally is drawn into an extraordinary journey that will take her to the surface.

L’écriture d’Ally was provided by the director himself, accompanied by Jason Yu (Sleep), who was assistant director to Bong Joon-ho on Okja (2017). Although this is the South Korean director’s first animated feature film, he had already experimented with this mode of expression for a short film, Looking For Paradisein 1992, while he was a film student.

The photography ofAlly will be provided by Hong Kyung-pyo, collaborator of Bong Joon-ho on Mother (2009), Snowpiercer, le Transperceneige (2013) et Parasite. Visually, the inspirations come from the work of Claire Nouvian, Abysspublished in 2006 by Éditions Fayard. This beautiful book showed previously unpublished photographs of the seabed, revealing living beings at a depth of nearly 10,000 meters.
« It is a scientific book. My wife went to a bookstore before returning with this book, which she showed me and said: “Look at the photos, they are absolutely magnificent, we discover the seabed, the colors, it’s sublime,” he explained during his masterclass, at the Cannes Film Festival, in 2021. “ The story and animation derive from this book ”, he then specified (from the 55th minute, below).
