Surf Coast Shire has fenced off a section of the Jan Juc Creek reserve between Hoylake Avenue and Duffields Road after asbestos was detected in a sample taken from the surface of the recently topsoiled area.
Contractors engaged by the RACV have recently been working in the area to build a pipe to take stormwater from Jan Juc Creek to irrigate the Torquay Golf Course.
Mayor, Cr Brian McKiterick, said Council will be working with the EPA and RACV to ensure the area is cleaned up as a matter of priority.
“Preliminary tests have shown that the presence of minor amounts of non-friable, not easily crumbled asbestos on site. The site has now been secured and it is important that the site is not disturbed to minimise any public health risk.
“The priority now is to identify any further contamination in the area and to arrange for treatment of the area so that the reserve can return to its normal state. The cleanup works will be designed and supervised by a qualified occupational hygienist to ensure the safety of the abutting residents and public at large. Council will be working with the RACV, its contractor and the EPA to ensure this is undertaken.”
