(Torquay, VIC – Sunday February 5, 2012): The states best junior surfers took apart the waves at Jan Juc for the second round of the Victorian Junior Surfing Titles over the weekend.
With a small clean swell on hand and scorching temperatures, the best junior surfers in the state took to the waves looking for valuable ratings points towards selection into the state team.
Standout surfers for the weekend were Ruby Campbell (Jan Juc), Henry Hutchins (Barwon Heads), Billy Harrison (Barwon Heads), Kelly Laity (Sandy Point) and Joe Van Dijk (Phillip Island).
The fierce rivalry between Under 16 Boy’s Joe Van Dijk (Phillip Island) and Cody Robinson (Jan Juc) continued at Jan Juc with both surfers going toe to toe.
It was Van Dijk who came out on top this time setting up a huge show down at Phillip Island next weekend for the final round.
Van Dijk was trailing throughout the majority of the final on the weekend, however was able to score a 7.67 (out of 10) to rocket him to the lead in the final minutes.
This puts both surfers on equal points heading to Phillip Island.
Noah Cooney (Phillip Island) and Tom Harrison (Barwon Heads) placed in third and fourth respectively.
In the under 18 Girls, it was local Ruby Campbell who out surfed her fellow finalists.
Campbell was a standout all event and took down Kelly Laity (Sandy Point), Maddie Corstorphan (Torquay) and Meg Sweeney (Jan Juc) in the final.
Other winners on the day were Walter Hiatt (Under 18 Boys, Phillip Island), Piper Harrison (Under 14 Girls, Mornington Peninsula), Jemima Hutchins (Under 16 Girls, Barwon Heads) and Xavier Huxtable (Under 14 Boys, Jan Juc).
The Victorian Junior Surfing Titles is Supported by Play it Safe by the Water, Surfing Victoria and the Illicit drugs in Sport Program.
