(Torquay, VIC – Friday, 16th December 2011): Elite surfing will be returning to Victoria in summer next year, as the world famous Bells Beach and Jan Juc host the Championship Moves Open and Pro Junior Presented by CHIKO, and the EVO Womens Pro Junior Presented by Ghanda.
The 5-day surfing festival will comprise of the 1 Star men’s ASP World Tour event, 3 Star boys ASP Pro Junior and 3 Star girls ASP Pro Junior, with a total prize pool of $35,000 USD.
There has not been an ASP Star Rated event in Victoria since the Roxy Womens Surf Festival on Phillip Island, which stopped 4 years ago.
Surfing Victoria CEO, Max Wells, is excited to have some more elite level competition on our coast.
“This is a great opportunity for Victorian surfers to be able to have a go at an ASP star event in their back yard and hopefully gain some world ranking points”
“We will be encouraging as many local surfers as possible to get involved, and in particular our junior surfers so that they gain some experience surfing against elite surfers.”
With the Open event coinciding with the Pro Junior, there will be some of the biggest names in junior surfing competing in both events along with some big names from Victoria.
Up and coming local, Cahill Bell-Warren (Bells Beach) is looking forward to having a world tour event in his backyard.
“It’s awesome to start the 2011/12 ASP calendar at home, and it’s great for young Victorians to get some early points at the start of the year.
“It’s not the perfect window for waves, but there has been a bit of history of big swells in early January, so I’m confident that we will get some great waves at Bells Beach.”
The girls will also get a chance to strut their stuff with the EVO Women’s 3 Star Pro Junior Presented by Ghanda.
Victorian favorite, Nikki van Dijk (16, Phillip Island), will be looking to start her 2012 Pro Junior campaign off with a good result after finishing 4th overall this year, including her maiden Pro Junior victory at Merewether, NSW.
Van Dijk has also been impressive in several Womens World Tour events where she has been a wildcard, making the quarterfinals at Manly.
The Championship Moves Open and Pro Junior Presented by CHIKO will run from Janurary 5th to Janurary 9th.
The EVO Women’s Pro Junior will run from Janurary 5th to Janurary 8th.
