Announcing The Inaugural Lorne Performing Arts Festival

Lorne Festival of Performing Arts50's – 60's Culture By The Sea

9th – 11th September 2011

Transport yourself to a bygone era and glam up – 50’s style – as the majestic seaside location of Lorne hosts the inaugural Lorne Performing Arts Festival; 50’s – 60’s Culture By The Sea from 9th – 11th September 2011.

Immerse yourself in the beauty of this historic town while you enjoy a multitude of stellar performances from some truly fabulous artists.

Music, visual arts, photographic exhibitions, burlesque, circus, a swing spectacular, DJ’s, parties, poetry, storytelling and more!

The Gala Opening Night Cabaret will kick off the festival with performances from Melbourne Surf Western legends, Mikelangelo and the Tin Star feat. St Clare. The Tin Star’s blistering instrumental tunes, awash with tremolo twang will set the dance floor alight, and front man Mikelangelo’s rumbling baritone will leave audiences in rapture!

The sensational and sassy Go Girl Gadget Go Go Dancers will shimmy and strut their stuff as will local jazz and burlesque star Jessie Upton. Contortion and circus queen Ruby Rubberlegs will wow the audience with her eye-popping comedy and circus routines.

Saturday afternoon will be a Swing Spectacular and all are invited to attend. 50’s – 60’s dress code is encouraged so get out those polka dot frocks and polish those shoes, trip the light fantastic and prepare to be laid out by The Shuffle Club with their hot blend of swing, jazz, blues and boogie.

Keeping things kicking along will be demonstrations by the Swing Patrol Dancers and the incredibly skilled acrobatic troupe Circus Trick Tease. Your MC for the afternoon will be the ever charming and charismatic Mikelangelo.

The entertainment will continue all over town: Tableaux Vivants will pop up in shop windows and throughout the main street. There will be street performers and male grooming and deportment workshops.

Surf and photograph exhibitions will be held including a Freeze Frame exhibition by Lorne-Airey’s School VCAL students using Lorne’s Historic Society images.

Poetry and storytelling at the Lorne Fisheries Co-op at sunset with local legend, poet and hopeless romantic Christos Raskatos.

Forums, workshops and performances are scheduled by other local artists including The Beachniks, Victoriana Gaye, Ghost Mutt, Jessie Upton and stay tuned for some surprise guest artists.

Saturday night will see a full feature performance by Mikelangelo and the Tin Star followed by the very glamorous ladies of Hi Ball Burlesque who will showcase their unique blend of 50’s style glamour.

Clad in sumptuous costumes and dripping with rhinestones, the girls of Hi Ball have captivated discerning audiences all over Australia. A little bit cheeky and just a little bit risqué!

A major highlight is the surfboard display and forum by Murray Walding. The Lorne-based archivist possesses possibly Australia's most extensive collection of surf-related memorabilia and he has generously given it over to the Festival for the public’s viewing pleasure.

In his forum, Murray explores the history of Australian surfing as a cultural phenomenon, charting the key players and stories of each era.

An exciting development for the community of Lorne which already possesses a strong arts calendar with The Falls Art Music & Art Festival (December 2011) and Lorne Sculpture (October 2011).

Residents will be welcoming visitors to all the festival events with a number of local businesses opening up their venues for performances.

Visit Mantra Erskine House Ballroom, babalu Bar, QDOS Arts, The Cumberland, Ovenhouse, The Lorne Pier and various other locations throughout Lorne to be part of the action.
