Wrap Yourself in Words this Winter
Dates: Friday 19 August – Sunday 21st August
Following the enormous success of the previous three Festivals, attracting around 3,000 literary lovers and art aficionados, Aireys Inlet will again host the Festival of Words in conjunction with the International Lighthouse Weekend on the 19th, 20th and 21st of August 2011.
The 3-day festival comprises a stimulating line up of poetry and writing workshops, readings, art exhibitions and live music to be launched on Friday night by former head of Penguin Publishing, Bob Sessions.
Poetry totem poles will herald the event as you drive into the coastal village of Aireys Inlet on the Great Ocean Road, wrapping the town in words.
Get cosy in the literary lounge with highly acclaimed authors including Alice Pung and Graeme Base – recently shortlisted for the Australian Book Industry Awards Book of the Year for Younger Children 2011 for his book, The Legend of the Golden Snail. You can be one of the first to grab a copy of Alice Pung’s latest book, Her Father’s Daughter, on pre-sale at the Festival. And enjoy the Wheeler Centre conversation between Tony Wilson an Adam Zwar (creator of Lowdown & Wilfred).
Catch David Corlett, most recently seen on the SBS documentary Go Back Where You Came From, discussing his writings on refugees at the unique venue ‘Cimarron Bed Breakfast and Books’ (bookings essential). Then head along to the Aireys Inlet Community Hall for the special keynote address from David Astle, well known for his role as “Mr Dictionary” on SBS’ Letters and Numbers.
Foodies can tantalise their tastebuds at a literary lunch with ‘a la grecque’ chef, Pam Talimanidis or listen to Kate Herd talk about her book Kitchen Gardens of Australia with Millie Ross of ABC’s Gardening Australia. Art lovers will be pleased to hear the popular sculpture trail is back – with a literary twist – and can muse over a mixed media art exhibition on display at the Eagles Nest Fine Art Gallery all weekend.
This is but a small taste of the exciting line up of inspiring conversations, readings, poetry and writing workshops, art exhibitions and live music on offer during the 3-day festival. Entry is free to most events thanks to the generosity of sponsors.
