The Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) is reminding Victorians that they only have one week left to nominate people and groups who are making a positive difference to their local environment for the 2011 Landcare Awards.
DSE Natural Resources Executive Director Ingrid Duncan said: “Nominations for the 2011 National Landcare Awards have been extended until 22 July 2011 but that only leaves a week to nominate your Landcare local heroes.”
“Our Landcare volunteers give up their time to make sure Victoria’s natural environment is protected and restored so future generations can continue to enjoy it,” Ms Duncan said.
“All types of environmental and agricultural volunteers that deserve to have their efforts recognised can be nominated.”
“These awards are an opportunity to honour the tireless efforts of volunteers throughout the state who are making a difference to their local environment, particularly in the areas of sustainable farming, bushfire recovery, and awareness and partnership building – all worthy or recognition.”
“There are 18 categories open to Victorians and we are asking the community to get behind the awards and nominate their local Landcare hero.”
This year there are seven special Victorian categories:
- Heather Mitchell Memorial Fellowship – $5,000
- CitiPower and Powercor Landcare Network Award – $5,000
- Dr Sidney Plowman Travel and Study Award – $4,000
- DPI Sustainable Farming Award (regional) – $500 per CMA region; Rural Press Primary Producer Award (state)
- The Bushfire Recovery Award – $15,000
- Long Service to Landcare Award – $1,000
- Long Service to Landcare – Honour Roll
In 2011, there is also a once only opportunity for groups to acknowledge the work of their longest serving and most committed members through nominations to the Landcare Honour Roll which is being created to recognise Landcare’s 25th anniversary.
Landcare is a movement of individuals and groups focusing on managing the environment in their local area.
The work includes planting trees, stopping soil erosion, assisting with primary production, protecting Victoria’s native wildlife and controlling weeds and pests.
All state winners go forward as nominees in the biennial national Landcare awards, which will take place in 2012.
