Master photographer Barrie Sutherland will be celebrating the Bells Beach Easter Contest – 50 Years Anniversary, 1962 – 2011 with a significant exhibition and sale of fine art heritage images at WaterMarks Photo Gallery in Torquay.
In 1956 Barrie saw the visiting US surf team demonstrate Malibu surfboards at Torquay Point as part of the Melbourne Olympics. He was captivated!
A decade later Barrie created surf photography history when he paddled out to the Bells Bowl area and took the first ever photographs of surfers there from the water. He still uses that camera today to capture amazing images.
Renowned as a world class photographer, his images are in many key public and private surfing collections. Sutherland pioneered surf photography in Victoria.
According to Doug Warbrick, Rip Curl co-founder, Sutherland is an important figure in the surfing world. "The heritage of surfing in Victoria and especially Bells Beach owes so much to the great black and white images shot by Barrie in the 60's and 70's," he says.
Surfcoast Mayor Dean Webster will open the exhibition in the presence of many surf industry luminaries, past Bells champions and key surfing industry figures.
During April there will be additional displays of Sutherland’s images at Book Cellars bookshop at Torquay Central and the Rip Curl VIP Lounge at Bells Beach for the duration of the contest.
