Surf Coast Celebrates the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach Easter Classic

A series of banners is being unfurled across Torquay this week as the Surf Coast gears up to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Rip Curl Pro/Bells Easter Classic.

The banners, which reflect the rich history of pro-surfing in Torquay and at Bells Beach, will be placed along the Surf Coast Highway between Darian Road and Cowrie Road.

They have been funded by a $40,000 grant from Regional Development Victoria, which has also supported a number of other projects including:

  • Bells Gold – an exhibition that will be launched at Surf World Museum shortly showing the history of the Rip Curl Pro
  • A series of Live Sites at many venues around Torquay where visitors and locals can catch the action from Bells Beach from a live broadcast and enjoy the local hospitality. This will include restaurants, cafes and the Surf City precinct.
  • A mass participation day
  • A Community Arts Project that will leave a legacy to mark the 50th anniversary.

Mayor, Cr Dean Webster, said there would be much happening out of the water to celebrate the Rip Curl Pro’s 50th Anniversary.

“We thank Regional Development Victoria for helping to make the 50th anniversary of the Rip Curl Pro a great celebration,” Cr Webster said.

“This year, we also thank Rip Curl and Surfing Victoria for their work on this event and for donating ticket proceeds to maintaining the Bells Beach Surfing Reserve; which reflects the importance of Bells Beach to the local community.

“This year, all 3228 residents showing ID will also get free entry to the Rip Curl Pro. So there’s lots of reasons for the local community to turn out and celebrate this milestone.”
