GORCC seeks help for clean up

Surf Coast locals and visitors alike are being encouraged to make a difference to the local environment by registering as a volunteer for the Great Ocean Road Coast Committee’s Clean Up Australia Day sites.

The Great Ocean Road Coast Committee has registered Fisherman’s Beach and the Torquay Foreshore Caravan Park and surrounds as official cleanup sites for Clean Up Australia Day, which will be held on 6 March 2011.

Site supervisor and Great Ocean Road Coast Committee Coastal Project Officer Rohan Sharp said the Committee was hoping to get the local community involved and create positive outcomes for the environment.

“The Great Ocean Road Coast Committee is proud to support Australia's largest community based environmental event.

“Clean Up Australia Day is the perfect opportunity for everyone to come together and help clean up our local parks and waterways and think about how we can reduce our impact on the environment,” he said.

Clean Up Australia Chairman Ian Kiernan AO is encouraging everyone in Torquay to do their bit towards protecting local ecosystems while improving the appeal of their area.

“Australians generally do the right thing, but with each one of us producing two tonnes of rubbish every year, there is still too much waste ending up in our natural environment.

“Every piece of rubbish that ends up in our parks, waterways, bushland and on our streets or beaches is a potential killer of local wildlife,” Mr Kiernan said.

Mr Sharp said everyone was invited to register, roll up their sleeves and work together to achieve a cleaner, healthier and more attractive Torquay.

“It’s not too late to get involved, simply go to www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au, find a local site where you can register as a volunteer or simply turn up at one of the site locations on the Day and register as a volunteer,” Mr Sharp said.

Mr Kiernan said, “Clean Up Australia Day is a great excuse to get a group of mates together. You’ll sleep well at night knowing that you’ve helped out on Clean Up Australia Day 2011.”
