Sidney Nolan – the Gallipoli series

Sidney Nolan, Gallipoli (detail) 1963 (diptych), oil on hardboard. Collection: Australian War Memorial

until 1 May 2011

Sidney Nolan (1917-1992) was one of Australia's most complex, innovative and prolific artists.

The role of Australian troops in the Gallipoli campaign of World War 1 was a theme to which Nolan constantly returned throughout his artistic career. The 80 works in this exhibition constitute both a personal and public lament, commemorating not just the death of Nolan's brother Raymond during the Second World War, but a campaign that had cost so many Australian lives.

A rare opportunity for visitors to experience these striking and iconic works. Geelong Gallery is the sole Victorian venue for this exhibition.

An Australian War Memorial travelling exhibition

In tandem with Sidney Nolan – the Gallipoli series the Gallery is exhibiting a selection of works from the permanent collection by official World War 1 artist, Harold Septimus Power (1877-1951).
