The Department of Sustainability and Environment’s annual Summer by the Sea festival kicks off on Monday 3 January with a heap of coastal activities for the community to enjoy.
Spokesperson Joanne Ludbrook said the Summer by the Sea festival raises awareness of coastal and marine issues.
“At this time of year, it’s a wonderful opportunity for people to get involved and have some fun in the sunshine,” she said.
There is something for everyone this January. Check out 300 free events available all along the coast – including four different events at different times in the Lorne area and six varied activities over several dates and times at Port Fairy!
Activities suit all ages, and most are free including; rockpool rambles, guided walking tours, beachcombing, boat trips, kayaking, birdwatching and fishing lessons.
Activities available in the Anglesea area include:
- Weed Whacking Wednesday
- Coastal Estuary Adventure
- Mysteries of the Sea
- Kayak the Coast – Experience an estuary on this canoe adventure
Activities will be held at a number of coastal areas, including Jan Juc, Ocean Grove, Point Lonsdale, Wye River and Aireys Inlet.
The summer festival is run by the Department of Sustainability and Environment’s Coast Action/Coastcare program, with the ongoing support of volunteers and local experts.
Our partners and volunteer groups include Birds Australia, Marine discovery Centre, Corangamite CMA, Parks Victoria.
“Summer by the Sea lets our coastal communities and visitors engage with the coast in ways not usually open to them,” Ms Ludbrook said.
