Coastcare and Coast Action groups are in a flurry of activity with meetings, plantings, and weed control underway or planned for members and local communities.

Senior Coast Action/Coastcare facilitator Joanne Ludbrook said the groups are making significant contributions to community awareness and are enthusiastically embracing coastal protection.

“Our groups are creating wonderful opportunities for members and others to make a difference to our coastal environments,” she said.

“Their activities are also a great way for local individuals to meet like-minded people, to learn something about our coastline and to have a go at something new, even if only briefly.”

Recent activities included:

  • the regular Ocean Grove Coastcare meeting at the Ocean grove Surf Club.
  • the Point Addis planting activity with students from St. Therese Primary school, Torquay, who joined Parks Victoria and Friends of Point Addis.

Ms Ludbrook said two great opportunities to get involved are coming up over the next 10 days, supported by the Great Ocean Road Coastal Committee (GORCC).

“Torquay Coast Action will be planting on the Surf Coast Walk directly at the end of Horseshoe Bend Road on Sunday morning, 31 October,” she said. “Everyone is welcome and people should park at either car park and make their way toward the coast on the Great Ocean Walk.”

Jan Juc Coast Action Group and GORCC will hold their Gazania Weed Whacking Day next Sunday 7 November, with everyone meeting at the Bird Rock Car Park at 10am.

“All weed whackers are welcome to help the group get rid of this highly invasive weed,” Ms Ludbrook said.

“The South African Gazania out-competes native coastal plants and prevents germination and regeneration.

“People should bring some tools to dig up weeds and after their hard work they will be treated to a thank you barbecue.”

Ms Lubdrook said the organisers have also invited local fauna luminary Trevor Pescott to talk about the local mammal wildlife present in the Jan Juc cliff area.

Member of the Jan Juc Coast Action group, Glenda Shomaley said the help received by the group is highly valued.

“Our group greatly appreciates all the help we get from primary schools, Rip Curl and local community groups. So much can be achieved when many hands get busy and much enthusiasm is shared.”
