A major fishing tournament being held in conjunction with this year’s St. Leonards Festival is expected to attract more than 200 entries.
Competition organiser Phil Walters said the number would set a new bench mark for the event which is now in its third year.
“Indications are that numbers are up by about fifteen percent on last year”, he said.
“It shows a real growth in the interest level of the Festival generally and the fishing tournament in particular”.
“The tournament is becoming a great Cup weekend tradition for anglers from throughout the Peninsula and the region”.
Mr. Walters said bayside St Leonards is the perfect location to host such an event.
“The sheltered waters here contain a large number of species and offer so much for the seasoned and novice angler alike”.
The tournament boasts trophies and prizes valued at more than a thousand dollars.
They will be awarded for the heaviest fish in each species of Flathead, Squid, Whiting, Snapper and Gummy Shark.
There are also categories for the heaviest aggregate bag for adult, junior male and junior female anglers.
In the interests of conservation, only one fish per species will be eligible for weigh in.
The competition will run from 6pm Friday 29th October until 3.00pm Saturday 30st October.
Weigh-ins will be conducted at tournament headquarters at the St Leonards boat ramp between 10am and 3.00pm on the Saturday.
Presentations will be made on the St Leonards Festival main stage an hour after the weigh-ins.
Entry fee is $5 per competitor.
Entry forms are available from Mario’s Bait and Tackle Moolap, FoodWorks St Leonards, The Fisherman’s Shack Drysdale and at the St Leonards Hardware.
They will also be available at the St Leonards boat ramp on Saturday from 10am.
